With the first race of the Short Ocean Pointscore being abandoned, this weekends offshore sprint saw a spectacular start to the series. This race, conducted by the RSYS saw teams racing for the Gascoigne Cup, one of the oldest short ocean race trophies on the Sydney short ocean racing calendar with it first presented to the RSYS and raced for in 1886.
The 27 crews that made it out to the start line saw a stark contrast to the forecasted weather. The predicted slow-building breeze eventuated into 20-25knots from the northeast which challenged the whole fleet. This
David Griffith’s Chinese Whisper relished the conditions and was able to claim first in IRC Div 1 and PHS Div 1, whilst in IRC Div 2 J Stenning & C Gunn’s Stormaway took the top spot. PHS Div 2 saw John Maclurcan’s Morag Bheag be victorious.
ORCi saw Ian Box’s Toy Box 2 lead Div 1 with Dennis Cooper’s Amante claiming top spot in Div 2.
