Short Ocean Pointscore – 2020 Morna Cup

A strong fleet of 24 yachts across two divisions took on the Short Ocean Pointscore on Saturday, a short, fun offshore course in what was a nice, consistent wind.

The race, which is one of three Short Ocean Pointscore races conducted by Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, saw teams competing for the historic Morna Cup. The sterling silver cup was presented to RSYS in 1913 by its then-Commodore Sir Alexander MacCormick and named after his yacht Morna.

starting at 1200hrs from Watsons Bay, teams were buoyed down the Harbour by a fresh 12-16 knot south-south-easterly breeze which held out for the duration of the day’s racing.

Taking home PHS Division 1 victory, and the Morna Cup, was Walter Lewin’s Vento (CYCA), followed by Peter Sorensen’s Advanced Philosophy (MHYC) and Adam Lavis’ Wild Thing (CYCA). PHS Division 2 was claimed by John Maclurcan’s Morag Bheag (RSYS), with John Amos’ Utopia (CYCA) second and Pete Franki’s Salt Shaker (CYCA) third.

In IRC, Division 1 went to Rob Aldis’ Khaleesi (MHYC) followed by Advanced Philosophy second and Tim Cox’s Minerva (RSYS) third. Division 2 victory was taken by Jack Stening & Col Gunn’s Stormaway (MHYC) followed by Salt Shaker and Dennis Cooper’s Amante (CYCA).

The next race of the Short Ocean Pointscore, the David Burke Memorial, will be conducted by CYCA 1200hrs Saturday 5 December – we hope to see you there!
