Jim, who led a fulfilling life, was born in Ruby, Alaska, but grew up in Southern California during the great depression. Later, he enjoyed a successful career in commercial real estate in Southern California. But it is his yachting feats that Jim became renowned for.

He first came to prominence in Australian sailing, taking line honours with Kialoa II in 1971. He returned to the race two more times with his next yacht, Kialoa III, famously taking line honours and breaking the race record in 1975 in 2 days 14 hours 36 minutes 56 seconds, the first yacht to crack three days. That record held for a record 21 years. He returned in 1977 with Kialoa III and won the double of line and overall honours.

Jim, who also updated to Kialoa’s IV and V, remains an institution in yacht racing. He left an indelible mark on our Sydney Hobart race.

Jim dominated international ocean races with Kialoa I, Kialoa II and Kialoa III. In 1962 Kialoa I won the San Diego-Acapulco race in record time, starting a long history of outstanding yacht racing wins.
