Our Members fared very well at the 2023 Hamilton Island Race Week, where competitors enjoyed balmy and idyllic scenes, as well as challenging racing conditions, particularly over the final days when the tradewinds built to over 20kts.
CYCA had 24 boats entered and No Limit, Matador, Virago, Nizam, Calibre 12, Team Hollywood, Drumfire, Sydney, Enigma, Nautical Circle, Ciao Bella and Holy Cow! in particular all performed strongly in their divisions – with Matador dominating Rating Division 2, made up largely of TP52s.
Whether it was catching sight of condensed water vapor exhaling from a whale by day or admiring a frothy head of a beer by night, Hammo provided a fine slice of island life.
There was dry weather and a variety of boats on display. The breeze started promisingly, gave way to a couple of softer days and then picked up for the final few days of racing. Off the water, all the restaurants were open, concerts were full, the vibe was completely “back”, to pre-Covid levels according to our Commodore Arthur Lane.
From tequila tastings, champagne lunches and outdoor concerts to terrifically tailored functions like the Women in Sailing event at Keel Deck featuring speakers Stacey Jackson, Jessica Watson and Katie Spithill, events were all well attended.
One of the Matilda’s players Kyah Simon and some of her teammates remarkably had enough energy left from their outstanding FIFA Women’s World Cup efforts to venture up to Queensland and out on boats. They even made it to the final outdoor concert on Saturday were they reportedly danced the night away in the open-air village!
CYCA is proud to have had so many Members participate and we send our congratulations to all placegetters, competitors, race organizers and volunteers.
