On Friday 25th October, the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club held their annual SOLAS fundraising dinner attended by 70 guests, including CYCA Commodore Paul Billingham, Vice Commodore Noel Cornish and SOLAS Trustees David Gotze and Chairman David Kellett.
Chris Nicholson, an Olympic, World Champion, Round the World Sailor, as well as a local, was the guest speaker, enthralling those present with stories of his early days sailing. Chris went on to six world championships, representing Australia in two Olympic Games and competing in six Volvo Ocean races.
The local community supported the NCYC, donating food and drinks for the dinner and many interesting Silent Auction items, resulting in the club raising $12,650 for SOLAS.
SOLAS Chairman David Kellett sincerely thanked NCYC Commodore Steve Rae for his and the clubs ongoing support for SOLAS having raised over $35,000 in the two years and supporting the annual SOLAS Sydney dinner each year with a team from Newcastle.
All involved are looking forward to the dinner becoming an annual fixture at the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club.
