Founders’ Day

With the 75th year of the Club, Founder’s Day has been a part of the year long celebrations of our great club and looking back to where it all began.

The celebrations were plentiful with memorabilia located around the Club along with 1940 inspired beverages, lunch and music.

Over the weekend and surrounding days the Club has been graced with the presence of three magnificent yachts. Defiance, Australia’s oldest 8m class and competitor in five Sydney Hobarts spanning 1946 to 1957, with the famous Kathleen Gillet and Archina who undertook the very first Sydney Hobart in 1945.

Both Archina and Defiance ventured out on to the Harbour to take part in the Great Veterans Race which saw 23 classic yachts compete for The Windward Trophy.

A birthday celebration would not be complete without a cake. Wonderfully, Gordon Ingate, a 70 year member was competing on the day and able to represent the founding members to cut the 75th cake.

“Some of the stories that can be told about the Cruising Yacht Club are still in my memories, but you wont have time to listen to them all today. I hope you have all had a great day and the next 75 years are going to be even better!” Said an excited Ingate.

Thank you to all who came to join in the celebrations and look forward to the rest of the 75th year.
