22nd Lord Howe Island BBQ – 19 November 2024

For those interested in attending this year’s LHI BBQ, there will be a QLD at Sydney Amateurs at 1800hrs on 21 May.

The 21st BBQ was a great success in 2023 and although a blustery NE wind pushed us out of the traditional Ned’s Beach venue, everyone quickly regrouped to Lagoon Beach for a great evening of food, beverages and some lively entertainment from Tony Purkiss and the crew of White Pearl. Weather on the island was sensational and everyone thoroughly enjoyed all that was on offer, including some excellent scuba dives.

This was a wonderful setting for the BBQ with the majestic peaks of Mt Gower and Mt Lidgbird and boats swinging to their moorings in the lagoon as a backdrop. No doubt this will again be the site of this year’s BBQ, organised for the benefit of the Lord Howe Island Public School – providing funding for much needed extracurricular activities for the students, volunteers and teachers at the school. The school provide all the catering and always includes fresh BBQ’d LHI kingfish fillets!

Last year, six boats  sailed from various ports in OZ and one boat was passing through on a Pacific cruise. Several crews from previously attending yachts, including the now retired Fidelis, flew in for the event and we were also joined by some locals and holiday-makers. An absolutely great night had by all.

Those planning to attend the 2024 LHI BBQ on Tuesday 19 November are invited to attend the QLD at Sydney Amateurs on 21 May to meet and discuss their plans for mooring, crew requirements and accommodation. Those intending to fly to LHI are also invited. There will be a follow up “Compass Check” on 17 September for final preparations.
