CYCA team of James Hodgson, Finn Tapper and Harry Hall

Youth Sailing Academy at 53rd Governor’s Cup

The 53rd Governor’s Cup, hosted by Balboa Yacht Club in Newport Beach, CA, will begin on Tuesday, running through to Sunday, with a fleet of 12 teams all vying for their first victory at the event. Competitors will hail from six different countries, with Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, UK, Sweden and the United States lining up.

The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia has had a long and proud history with Balboa Yacht Club, most notably over the past four years, where not only has past Gov Cup champion, and World #1 Harry Price and his team came away with the glory in the 2015 and 2018 Governor’s Cup, but were also crowned World Champions in 2017 as BYC hosted the Championship event.

Now, a new CYCA skipper making his Gov Cup debut, Finn Tapper will look to follow in the footsteps of Price in this year’s event. Tapper will be in good hands, with Harry Hall returning to the event in 2019, having sailed to victory with Price last year. Joining Tapper and Hall as mainsail trimmer will be James Hodgson, the current Australian Match Racing National Champion.

Over the opening two days, each skipper will sail each other twice in a double round-robin format, where the Top 4 will then progress to the semi-finals. Racing will be streamed live via the Governor’s Cup Facebook page throughout the week.
