YSA turns 30 and invites its Alumni

The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s Youth Sailing Academy has an impressive alumni.

This year as we celebrate 30 years, there is a great opportunity to join us for a wonderful fundraising event to celebrate their achievements and catch up with some friendly faces about their experiences representing our Club, and country abroad.

From Andy Green and Will Parker who recently crewed onboard Caro to claim the 50th Rolex Fastnet Challenge Cup, to 10-time 18ft Skiff World Champion and Rolex Sydney Hobart Winner Seve Jarvin and America’s Cup and Sail GP champion Sam Newton  —— YSA alumni have, participated in almost every sailing event that exists across the globe.

The YSA 30th Anniversary Dinner on Friday 15 September will be a milestone, one-off event to further galvanise the sailing community around our outstanding program.

It aims to promote the achievements of the YSA, and ensure the legacy of Australian sailing is carried forward into the future.

In addition to the evening’s designated speakers – from sailing identities including America’s Cup legend John Bertrand AO and John Winning Jnr, skipper of maxi Andoo Comanche – those attending have the chance to meet and hear from many of our returning YSA sailors including Olympian Olivia Price, and match racing World Champions Harry Price, Tara Blanc-Ramos, Tom Grimes and James Hodgson.

This is a fundraising event that will include a donation to the YSA as part of the ticket price, as well as the opportunity to bid on auction items on the night.

“Through its school and community programs, the Youth Sailing Academy has nurtured our sailors, brought families together and ignited the passion for the sport of sailing in so many individuals,” CYCA Commodore Arthur Lane said.

“We are extremely proud that since 1993, the Youth Sailing Academy has developed into one of the world’s leading full-time youth sailing academies, with more than 500 graduates who have gone on to compete at major events around the world.

“These have included the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, Olympic Games, America’s Cup, SailGP, The Ocean Race and the World Match Racing Tour. We can’t wait to see all our Members and sailing community at this wonderful event,”

“Over the years, the Youth Sailing Academy has provided scores of young girls and boys the opportunity to either learn the basics of sailing, or to help make the successful transition from dinghies to keelboat sailing,” added Lane.

Members, guests and Club supporters of the YSA will be greeted with Piper Heidsieck champagne and canapés on arrival, followed by a sit-down two-course dinner provided by our new hospitality partner The Boathouse Group. Robert Oatley wines will be included throughout the night, along with beer, soft drinks and dessert to finish.

Many former students and staff will be in attendance, making this a night to remember.

On the night, there will be live and silent auctions held for a range of luxury items and money can’t buy experiences. The latter will even include the chance to attend a training day on the famous maxi Andoo Comanche.
