The final race of the Mount Gay Ocean Pointscore started in conditions that were very different to what was going to eventuate. With a gale warning for coastal waters the Race Committee decided to change from the scheduled short offshore to a harbour course.
With strong westerly winds forecast, crews were prepared for anything as they left the docks and made their way to the start line. What eventuated was a start in a light south westerly breeze which by the time the lead boats had completed their first lap, dropped to two knots while it swung around to the north and built to 5-10 knots.
During the next laps the breeze slowly made its way around to the west before finally settling and building quickly to 25-30 knots as yachts started to finish.
