Members tackling milestone Transpac

This year marks the 50th running of the iconic Trans Pacific Yacht Race from Los Angeles to Hawaii which was first conducted in 1906.

This year three Australian yachts will be taking part including Jim Cooney and Samantha Grant’s Comanche, Patrick Broughton’s iconic Kialoa II and Philip Turner’s Alive which will be forming part of the teams event to battle for the top country.

Kialoa II has a great history with ocean racing around the world, originally designed in 1963 for Jim Kilroy by the premier naval architecture firm of Sparkman and Stephens, she now calls Sydney Australia home owned by Patrick Broughton.

Remembering the long history the yacht has, Los Angeles Yacht Club currently has a display in their foyer which holds some amazing memorabilia displaying these adventures.

In a recent visit to the Transpac start, Patrick Broughton and Sailing Manager Justine Kirkjian  were presented with history books of Kialoa II A Dare to Win and All the Oceans (Ron Holland memoirs) to Kialoa II and CYCA.
