The ‘Interclub Challenge’ is a fleet racing series contested by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron & Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club to promote youth sailing. It was created in 2001 as a way to help identify & build youth sailors experience in fleet racing events who participated in a youth sailing program.
Each club hosts one round of the series, with one or two teams from each yacht club competing. Sailed on-board NCYC’s fleet of four Force 24s, six races were complete in a gusty 7-16 knot S-SW breeze inside Newcastle Harbour. The CYCA Youth Sailing Academy were represented by one team skippered by Nathan Gulliksen & Angus Malcolm with Chelsea Williams, Tom Warne and Hugo Leeming as crew. After a slow start, the team improved throughout the day, finishing with a 1,2,1 to shoot up the leader board to finish 2nd overall behind the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron team.
