John Cooley, Jack Twomey, Tom Cunich and Tom Barrington have won their first match racing event at this weekend, Captain John Piper Regatta, sponsored by CYCA member Dean Harrigan. In a whitewash final series against India Howard, Cooley, who was steering in his first event, fought back from an almost semi-finals defeat, to win the Finals 2-0.
In what was an incredibly tricky day on Sydney Harbour for the seven teams from the Cruising yacht Club of Australia and Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club, with a very light variable northerly for the majority of the day.
Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club’s team skippered by Harry Miller made the most of a second chance today to climb the leader board in the minor placing round robin. Two strong wins today saw him and his team of Emily Henderson, James Henderson, Callum Marsh and Seb Spencer finish in 5th place in their first match racing event as well.
India Howard came agonisingly close to the regatta title, remaining undefeated until the Final Series. James Pagett secured third place with two convincing wins over Development Match Racing Squad’s team led by Chelsea Williams.
