One Circular Quay – Australian Maxi Championship – Race Updates

The 2024 One Circular Quay Australian Maxi Championship kicked off on Friday 6 December with the 172 nautical mile Cabbage Tree Island Race, followed by a passage race on Sunday.

The start of the second and final passage race on Monday 9 December was delayed due to a lack of wind. The final event, the much-anticipated SOLAS Big Boat Challenge, will take place on Tuesday 10 December.

Matt Allen AM and James Mayo’s Master Lock Comanche took the double whammy in the Cabbage Tree Island Race, placing first on both Line Honours and IRC Overall. Finishing in flukey light to moderate nor’easter conditions.

Master Lock Comanche went on to win Line Honours in Sunday’s passage race in a 15-20 knot sou’easter that took the fleet of nine, 10 nautical miles offshore and then back to the Harbour for the finish.

Second and third on Line Honours in both the Cabbage Tree Island Race and passage race respectively were Christian Beck’s LawConnect and Grant Wharington’s Wild Thing 100. LawConnect and Master Lock Comanche are equal first on IRC Overall on Monday morning after two days of racing.

Phillip Turner’s Alive has retired from today and tomorrow’s racing after sustaining damage to its forward rudder during the Cabbage Tree Island Race start.

It’s a three-way tie between the Mini Maxi on IRC between Anthony Johnton’s URM Group, Sandy Oatley’s Wild Oats X and Robert Appleyard’s Moneypenny.

Defending Australian Maxi Champion, URM Group, will look to put some space between them and their competitors on the scoreboard in today’s final passage race, with a 12-knot nor’easter forecast.
