Technically Challenging Day for the Grant Thornton Short Haul & Short Ocean Races

Middle Harbour Yacht Club hosted Race 13 of the Grant Thornton Short Haul Pointscore and Race 9 of the Grant Thornton Short Ocean Pointscore on Saturday 21 February.

On a cool cloudy day, over 30 yachts took to the start line in tricky weather conditions. The weather & wind conditions were dominated by a strange high pressure system and ridge, which produced the forecast NE breeze, which then swung to an easterly breeze for the start of racing.

PRO John Hurley was forced to move the start line from Shark Island to Nielsen Park to ensure there was sufficient breeze to start in. With light breeze and approx. 2 knots of tide, a tricky start sequence ensued. On a day where the bigger boats of the fleet should have triumphed, some of the smaller boats in the both fleets took the honours.

The Short Haul fleet raced on a shortened course and finished in freshening easterly breezes. This was also true for the early finishers in the Short Ocean fleet (on a full course), with the last yachts finishing in a sou’easterly breeze.

For the Short Haul fleet, Troy & Scott Dillon’s Cmist took the line honours win and PHS Division win, with a second in IRC Division. Alex Brandon & James Connell’s Zephyr won IRC Division and placed second in PHS Division, with Paul Billingham & Pete McGee’s Elusive third in PHS Division. Rod Wills’ Great Expectations finished third in IRC Division.

Matthew Short’s Shortwave took line honours in the Short Ocean Pointscore race with Ray Entwistle’s Jackpot winning both IRC & PHS Division 1. Julian Farren-Price’s About Time placed second in IRC Division 1, with Annette & Robin Hawthorn’s Imagination third.

Howard & Susan Piggott’s Brilliant won IRC Division 3, with Michael Delaney and John Markos’ Eye Appeal second and S Rahilly & J Pelly’s Crosshaven third. In PHS Division 1 Dennis Cooper’s Amante finished second with Warwick Sherman’s Occasional Coarse Language third. In PHS Division 3 Gregg Daven’s Marigot Bay finished first with Michael Delaney & John Markos’ Eye Appeal second and Desmond Fagan’s Lisdillon third.
