Shifty conditions for Round 2 of the Interclub Challenge

The Interclub Challenge consists of three regattas held at Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron and the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia.  Each club submits two teams for each regatta.  The regatta consists of 6 races and each team is allowed to discard their worst result.  The overall winner of each regatta is determined by the tally of both teams scores together.

The second regatta of the series was held at the CYCA on the Sunday of the June long weekend.  Conditions were very trying for the Race Committee with the breeze swinging 180 degrees at times throughout the day.  Each race the PRO Steve Ward called for the windward mark to be moved because of shifts in the breeze.  The Race Committee should be congratulated for getting the six races scheduled in as they were challenged by both the wind conditions and the 110 strong fleet of the clubs Audi Winter Series.

The overall team winner was the CYCA team of Ethan Atkins, William Beckwith, Lucy Roper, Jack Hubbard, Ashlen Rooklyn, Prue Ward, Adam Watterson, and Alex Paton.  Evan Walker who coaches the CYCA’s Match Racing Development and Talented Sailor Squads was very pleased with the teams improvement throughout the regatta.

RSYS teams finished second overall in the regatta just finishing 3.5 points behind the CYCA teams.  RPAYC teams finished in third place overall.

CYCA Team 1 (Rookyln, Ward, Watterson, and Paton) had a convincing win of the regatta finishing on 8 points with three wins out of the six races.  Second place went to RPAYC Team1 (Stephanie Doyle, Georgina Johnstone, Brie Whitton and Elycie McClelland) on 12 points followed closely by RSYS Team 1 (Beren Beowulf, Kate Lindsay, Scott Butler, Jordan Reece).

The third race of the Challenge will be held at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron on Sunday 22 June.
