QLD a huge success, SOLAS Trusts raffle drawn

Last Friday night the Quiet Little Drink held its annual get together to pay tribute to those who achieved Rolex Sydney Hobart milestones with the 2006 race, to raise money for the CYCA Youth Sailing Academy and of course to be reunited with long time sailing friends!

In amongst the crowd of more than 160 there was, as always, a venerable gathering of some of the best known offshore sailors this country has produced including Syd Fischer, David Kellett, Don Mickleborough, Bernie Case, who flew up from Melbourne, and Maurice Cameron, amongst a number of other Hobart race veterans.

Bill Riley and David ‘Dellis’ Ellis were presented with their Tasmanian made Huon Pine and King William Pine plaques for reaching the 25 Sydney Hobart milestone while Tony Ellis became the 6th person to be added to the illustrious 40 Hobart honour roll.

A new initiative was added to proceedings with organiser Tony Cable creating smaller versions of the 25 and 40 plaques for those YSA sailors who contested their first Rolex Sydney Hobart last year.  ‘Sightie’ Hammond, the first person to reach 40 Hobarts, spoke fondly of his first race back in 1952 before presenting seven plaques to the wide eyed young sailors. Those awarded plaques were: Nic Dallen, Allan Jackson, Will Ryan, Mark Langford, James Francis, Jono English and Tim Austin.

MC Steve ‘Mothy’ Jarvin had no trouble holding the large audience’s attention with his microphone manner and yarns while the breakfast club’s fine fare complimented the evening perfectly.

The SOLAS raffle winners were also announced at the QLD with Commodore Matt Allen drawing the nine winners, including the lucky winner of the major prize of a $15,000 trip for two to take part in the CYCA Bonifacio Yacht Rally in September 2008.

The club would like to thank the associates and CYCA cruising for their assistance in selling the last of the CYCA SOLAS raffle tickets at the QLD function, and indeed all of the volunteers for their help over the past months.

The club would also like to acknowledge the support of the many members who purchased tickets with $8,370 in total raised for the SOLAS Trusts to continue their good work. – Lisa Ratcliff
