Nor’Easterly Breezes again for the Grant Thornton Short Haul and Short Ocean Race

What could have been a very tricky day on water turned out to be almost a textbook sailing day! A short AP at the start was required due to wind conditions and with the nor’easterly breeze not coming down into the Harbour PRO John Hurley moved the start line forward to Nielsen Park – for the second week in a row.

At 12.15 racing got under way in an 8-10 knot nor’easterly and strong outgoing tides. The predicted swells were not to eventuate leaving almost flat seas and the breeze was a little shifty but maintained its nor’ easterly flow throughout the day.

A full course was sailed and very happy sailors finished the race by 3.30 and returned to the CYCA to recall a great day’s sailing.

“No-one was more surprised than me with today’s weather conditions – Huey was very kind to us,” said PRO John Hurley. “I thought it was going to be a very tricky day on water with the winds and the swells – but the predicted conditions just didn’t occur.”

In the Short Ocean race Leslie Green’s Ginger took the line honours win, just ahead of Matthew Short’s Shortwave with Desmond Fagan’s Lisdillon close behind – with only two minutes separating all three finishers.

Lisdillon placed first in PHS Division 3, with Michael Delaney and John Markos’ Eye Appeal second and Tim Cox’s Soundtrack third.

In PHS Division 1, Dennis Cooper’s Amante was first with Stephen Thomas’ Blackadder second and Ray Entwistle’s Jackpot third.

Jackpot also placed first in IRC Division One with Julian Farren-Price’s About Time second and Annette & Robin Hawthorn’s Imagination third.

In IRC Division 3 Eye Appeal was first with Howard & Susan Piggott’s Brilliant second and John Maclurcan’s Morag Bheag third.

For the Short Haul fleet, John & Ann Kirkjian’s Lady Ann took the line honours win from Troy & Scott Dillion’s CMist, Rod Wills’ Great Xpectations and Paul Billingham and Pete McGee’s Elusive.

Alex Brandon & James Connell’s Zephyr placed first in IRC Division, with Jon Short & Miles Bastick’s MRX second and Lady Ann third.

Warren & William Grounds’ Mr Bojangles won PHS Division, with Elusive second and Zephyr third.
