CYCA YSA Coach Gabrielle King wins Gold at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship

CYCA YSA coach Gabrielle King made it a triple success for the Kingston gold medal, defending her title in the Laser Radial class at the recent Volvo Youth Sailing Championships held in Arhus, Denmark recently. 

After Day 1 of racing Gabrielle was placed second behind Isabella Bertold of Canada with Cathrine Hall of Denmark third.

Day 2 saw Gabrielle take the lead after a consistent top five positions with Isabella Bertold second only two points behind with Heidi Tenkanen finishing third after posting a first and fifth position in the days racing.

Day 3 turned out to be a perfect day for Gabrielle King, with the defending champion in the Laser Radial scoring two bullets to increase her overall lead to six points.  And by Day 4 it was clear the Gabrielle King was the odds on favourite to defend her title. She added a third bullet to her scoreline and maintained her run of all top-five finishes to extend her overall lead in the Laser Radial fleet. 

On the final day, King scored her fourth and fifth bullets of the championship in two races to take the title in style. “I thought after day two it was a possibility to win and then the wind gods looked down on me and things kept going my way and it has ended up with this win. This is the best event I love it,” said the ecstatic Gabrielle. Susana Romero of Spain finished with the silver medal position, and New Zealand’s Cushla Hume-Merry  took the bronze.

Additionally, CYCA member Byron White, together with Rhys Mara finished 5th overall in the 29 Boy (2 person) Class, with Great Britain crew of James Peters and Edward Fitzgerald taking first place.
