After five races, the CYCA’s youth team of Evan Walker and Kyle Langford is leading the Hobie 16 class of the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship which is being sailed from Busan, Korea, from 14-23 July.

More than 200 of the world’s best youth sailors representing 46 countries are contesting the Championship with racing taking place on the waters between the East China Sea and the Sea of Japan, an area renowned for strong wind and current.

Evan and Kyle trained hard for this event, sailing several times a week in the Advanced Squad over winter and also in their Hobie 16.

They have been lucky enough to be coached by NSWIS coach Craig Ferris who spotted the boys’ potential and has been working with them ever since. Ferris sees the ISAF Youth Worlds as a huge launching pad for the boys as many past Youth Team sailors have gone from there on to successful Olympic and international sailing campaigns.

Today is the first day of the 39th Governor’s Cup at Newport Harbour, California, and the YSA is again fielding a strong team of youth sailors for the under-20 regatta sailed on the Gov Cup 21s.

Skipper Tom Barker, mainsheet hand Will Ryan and bowman Ted Hackney are amongst four Australian teams contesting the regatta which has attracted an international line up of 12 teams.

“The team has showed great commitment to training hard for this world class event and like those YSA sailors who have gone before them, will no doubt make an excellent impression with the event organisers and achieve some good results,” said YSA coach/manager Jenni Bonnitcha who is accompanying the team.

“Each year the YSA sends a different team to this regatta which gives all sailors an opportunity to strive for selection. On return the sailors bring back a broader knowledge of skills and are encouraged to share their experiences with others,” Jenni added.
