2008 Nations Cup – Australia take Womens, NZ the Mens

CYCA YSA Team Captain Amanda Scrivenor was part of the winning crew representing Australia at the Nations Cup, hosted by Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, Auckland. The team included included Katie Spithill (skipper), Nina Curtis and Jessica Eastwell.

The Australian Womens crew took the Nations Cup Qualifier, sailed off Westhaven under the burgee of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. In the Mens event Australia was represented by CYCA members Will Ryan, Evan Walker and Ted Hackney.

With the promise of more wind in the forecast for Sunday’s racing, New Zealand’s Jessica Smyth and her crew left the dock on Sunday determined to claw back the 4-0 lead that Katie Spithill’s Australian Women’s crew had scored on Saturday.

Things went well and they won the first two races of the day, to be trailing 2-4 before the Australians refound their form and then bounced back and won the next three races, for an overall 7-2 result to clinch the Women’s place in the Nations Cup Final in Brazil next year.

The Austrailian and New Zealand mens teams continued their close battle from Saturday, trading wins before young Adrian Short and his Kiwi crew, the Burling brothers put three wins together to give them a buffer and then went on to be the eventual winners by 7 – 4.
