CYCA represents at the Trofea Princesa Sofia Regatta

Sailing from 29 March to 6 April, the World Sailing 53rd Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía Regatta in Mallorca, Spain represents one of the final major events leading up to the Paris 2024 Olympics. With less than 115 days until the start of the Olympics, tensions are high as sailors sneak in the last tacks of global competition.

The CYCA is well represented at the event, with honorary member Matt Wearn sailing in the ILCA 7 class and members / YSA alumni Olivia Price/Evie Haseldine sailing in the 49erFX class. Wearn and Price/Haseldine are set to go to the Olympics this summer. Price/Haseldine are fresh off their Olympic Selection by Australian Sailing last week.

At the end of Day 1, Wearn sits in 4th place while Price/Haseldine are waiting to sail off the first start of the regatta. Day 1 brought full-on breeze, with gusts around 30 knots and big, untidy swell.

Of the first day, Wearn says “I guess that is my best start for a few years here it was quite brisk, a one and a three for the day is a good start. It was not easy. In this really big fleet getting off the start line with speed in the big waves was the key because then you could use your boatspeed, that was half the job.”
