Wild Oats achieved the unique feat of winning the Sydney Hobart both on IOR and IRC.

CYCA adds new division for Great Veterans Race

The CYCA has responded to the fast-growing interest in heritage offshore racing by adding an IOR Division to the annual Great Veterans Race.

Entry in the new division will be open to any yacht with a launch date after 1975 and prior to 1991 that has competed in at least one Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

The 2022 Great Veterans Race will take place on Saturday 14 May.

It is fitting that among the first to signify their interest in competing was Wild Oats, the 1985 Farr 43 commissioned by the late Bob Oatley for the Admiral’s Cup.

The sloop was the last IOR Sydney Hobart winner (1993) and won again – re-named as Wild Rose – on IRC handicap in 2014.

Chairman of the Great Veterans Race Committee, David Champtaloup, says the addition of yachts from the IOR era was inevitable.

“There are just so many great boats, with great racing pedigrees, still out there from those decades and still sailing. They form an essential part of the history of the race,” David said.

Other yachts expected to compete in the new division include Sydney Hobart winners Zeus II (1981) and Sagacious V (1990). Snapping at their heels could be Berrimilla, Azzurro and Gun Runner.

The event is ‘no extras’, which encourages many owners of classic pre-1976 yachts to take part. That fleet will race in two divisions based on size and known performance.

Famous Sydney Hobart veterans likely to again face the starter in May include Margaret Rintoul, Fidelis, Caprice of Huon, Lolita, Camille, Mister Christian, Love & War, Anitra and Solveig.

“This is so important for the Club”, said CYCA Commodore Noel Cornish.

“We cherish the heritage of the Sydney Hobart and the whole history of Australian offshore racing. These are the boats that made it happen. We’re delighted to have this way of celebrating their contribution.”

Entries are now open for the 2022 Great Veterans Race. If you have not participated in previous Great Veterans Races but would like to express interest, please email the CYCA Sailing Office.
