Olivia and Evie begin their International Campaign

The opening day of the Princess Sofia Trophy held in Palma, Mallorca, welcomed the sailors with harsh conditions of a 30-knot breeze at freezing temperature as low as 10 degrees centigrade.

Three members from our club competed in this five-day regatta in two divisions with Olivia Price and Evie Haseldine competing in the 49erFX and our Honorary Member Matt Wearn in the ILAC7.

Olivia Price, the 2012 London Games Silver medalist and Evie Haseldine are both alumni of the Youth Sailing Academy. Matt Wearn was recently awarded CYCA Honorary Membership after his gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

After only three months of work together the duo of Olivia and Evie secured the 32nd place among 56 competitive fleets. “It’s great to see how the class has evolved and it’s great to be back racing on the international circuit after six years away from it,” Price commented.

Matt Wearn continued his stellar form coming from the back and scoring a bullet in the last race to secure the second position at the ILAC7. “In the second race the breeze was more settled, and I sailed well to win,” commented Wearn after his win.

Congratulations to the Members on a commendable performance at the prestigious international event.
