Cruising Yacht Club of Australia Members recognised Peter Shipway’s contribution to the Club and Ocean Racing at this year’s annual general meeting, when they unanimously elected him a Life Member.
Peter has been a valued member and contributor to the club for 48 years, starting when he first became a member of the Club in 1972 before moving into roles within the Club in 1978 and continuing to this current day.
Following is a brief summary of Peter Shipwayʼs valuable service to the Club:
- Marina Manager 1978 – 1981
- General Manager 1981 – 1984
- Sailing Committee member for eight years from 1985 through 1993
- Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race committee member in 1985 and 1986
- Co-founder of the CYCA Youth Sailing Academy and Committee member for six years from 1992 through 1997
- CYCA Club Archives Committee member since 2006
- CYCA Premises Committee member since 2018
- CYCA Special Events Committee Member for the 75th RSHYR
- CYCA RSHYR 2019 Classic Yacht Regatta Committee Member
- Member of the selection panel for the CYCA “Hall of Fame”
- CYCA Video Archives Project co-founder and interviewer (21 completed)
- Proof read David Colfeldʼs “A History of the CYCA” titled “From Ratbags to Respectability”
Peter is also a distinguished yachtsman. Included in his accomplished Ocean Racing record:
- 31 Sydney Hobart Yacht Races, crewing in two overall victories and five line honours wins
- Eight Admiralʼs Cup series, one as the Australian Team Captain with one victory, a second and a third placing
- The Americaʼs Cup 1980 Series Challenge as a crew member
