13 hardy boats took on the opening race of the 2022/23 Wednesday Twilight Series on a grey and gusty Sydney Harbour.
Rain fell throughout the race as 18-20 knots of breeze from the east – gusting up to 26 knots – made it a quick race on a shortened course.
Jason and Mary King’s Farr 40 SOLyMAR enjoyed a very clear start as the only boat in Division A, getting around in just under 53 minutes.
Division B featured five boats – Scarlett O’Hara, Monkey Magic, It Happens, Luna Blue and Superfine.
Just 12 seconds separated the first three boats over the line, as David Watson’s Beneteau First 45 Luna Blue finished ahead of David Chesters and Craig Young’s It Happens and Rob Skol’s Scarlett O’Hara.
Scarlett O’Hara, with members of the Concierge Program on board, won on corrected time, from Monkey Magic (John Penfold) and It Happens.
Lee Hawksley’s Beneteau Oceanis 40.1 Boomerang and John Clinton’s Beneteau Oceanis 50 Holy Cow battled for Division C honours.
Holy Cow was first across the line but Boomerang got the edge on corrected time, winning by 16 seconds.
Division D also featured five boats – Danielle, Shorething, Mammoth, Tuberose and Astraea.
James Butler’s Northshore 380S Shorething got the gun from Christopher Taylor’s Beneteau Oceanis 34 Danielle, but the two switched positions on handicap as Danielle claimed the first win of the season.
Les Katz’s Beneteau 351 Mammoth was third.
Race 2 will start at 1730hrs on Wednesday 12 October. Entries close at 1200hrs on the day of each race.
