Vale Sue Gallie

By Narelle Ryan, Fellow CYCA Member, Sydney Hilton colleague and life-long friend

Sue Gallie was an Eastern Suburbs girl through and through. She was brought up in Bondi and went to Bondi Public School and later moved to Double Bay. She was a CYCA Member for many years and often volunteered with the Breakfast Club.

Sue attended Sydney Girls High School and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Sydney University where she met and became a life-long friend of fellow CYCA Member, Fraser Johnston.

In 1966, 21-year-old Sue was crowned Miss Australia at a glittering ceremony in Sydney Town Hall. This propelled Sue into the media spotlight and a wonderful year of overseas travel promoting all things Australian.

Following her Miss Australia win, Sue was Channel 9’s weather presenter and ultimately carved out a successful public relations career working for organisations including the Australian Medical Association, the Liberal Party of Australia and the Hilton hotel chain based at the Sydney Hilton.

Sydney Hilton was the first five-star hotel in Australia and all major national events were held there. It was also the social hub of Sydney. Sue successfully entertained Heads of State, parliamentarians, corporate heavyweights, entertainers, actors and more.

Although many marriage proposals were on offer, Sue chose to remain single and enjoy her career.

Sue was an incredibly special and unique individual who was a great ambassador for Australia and accomplished much in her lifetime.
