It is with great sadness we report the passing on March 20 of Club Member Richard Robinson.
Richard was a very active member of the club, owning several yachts and racing them in both inshore and coastal races. He was also a Club Director.
On retiring from racing Richard and his wife Jill moved to Mooloolaba but always kept a close connection to the CYCA through the many friends they made there over the years and frequent visits to the club.
Former crew member, Tony Craven shares some of his memories of his time racing with Richard.
“I first sailed with Richard on Riddles, a Peter Cole Nantucket 31 in the late 70’s early 80’s. Richard then bought Magic Formula, a Cavalier 37.
“He competed in the CYCA inshore races, the winter series, the Sunday spinnaker races and twilight racing on both of these boats.
“Richard did numerous Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Races with Magic Formula. I remember racing with him in 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1991 races on that boat.
“Richard often spoke in ‘riddles’ as the name of one of his boats implied. All who sailed with him will remember his quick wit, his generosity of character, good humour and above all his patience when things didn’t go quite right…
“Richard was one-of-a-kind, a good friend and mentor. He will be greatly missed.”
With a red wine in hand and a cheeky comment to share, Richard will remain in friend’s and colleague’s memories as a one-of-a-kind gentleman who will be sorely missed by all who knew and sailed with him.
Jill Robinson has advised that when circumstances permit there will be a Celebration of Life for Richard’s friends at the CYCA.
