Hamish east of Bass Strait on Lass O'Luss in 1961

Vale Hamish Lindsay

The CYCA mourns the passing of 50 Year Member and Sydney Hobart Yacht Race participant from the early 1960s, Hamish Lindsay.

Hamish joined the CYCA in 1962, having first become involved in sailing on the Derwent in Hobart in the 1950s through The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania.

Hamish travelled to Sydney as a last-minute crew onboard Neville McEnnally’s Malohi after the 1959 Sydney Hobart Yacht Race and stayed on as crew racing on Sydney Harbour and working at Neville’s photography studio. When not racing on weekends, Hamish was regularly seen on the harbour photographing yachts and writing articles for Power Boat and Yachting.

Hamish crewed on Malohi in the 1960 Sydney Hobart when the yacht came third.

Hamish also crewed during the 1961 Sydney Hobart on Lass O’Luss

Hamish joined the NASA Space Programme in 1963 travelling to Carnarvon in Western Australia to establish the tracking station in the early days of manned space flight. Hamish moved to Canberra with his family in 1966 to work at the Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station where he worked on all the Apollo missions finishing up in 1984 with the Deep Space Network. He went on to work in the technical area of the High Court of Australia.

Hamish built a Highway 21 in his garage and later acquired an Endeavour 24 – Brindabella which he regularly raced on Lake Burley Griffin winning Champion boat and proudly being presented with the trophy by Kay Cottee AO.

Hamish will be remembered for his vast historical sailing knowledge and his insistence on doing things on a boat properly. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
