Vale Graeme Fraser

It is with great sadness we report Graeme Fraser, a veteran of 29 Sydney Hobarts and a CYCA member since 1979, passed away peacefully on Monday morning 15 April following a long illness; he was 73.

Graeme and his brother Bob sailed their first Sydney Hobart together in 1973 on the 36 foot yacht, Astelot. It was the only Hobart the pair did together.

Graeme sailed on a variety of boats, including three owned by CYCA commodores: Joe Diamond’s Duet in 1975, Kerry Roxburgh’s Ghost II in 1978 and John Bleakley’s Myuna in 1982, ’83 and ’84. His last race was in 2009 on David Pring’s Beneteau Oceanis 37, Livewire.

In 2005 Graeme was inducted into the ’25 Hobarts’ Hall of Fame, saying at the time: “My favourites were ‘75 aboard Duet – ‘a good fast spinnaker ride – and ‘94 on Never A Dull Moment, because it was the 50th Anniversary race.”

Condolences go to Graeme’s daughter Jo, son Malcolm and Graeme’s brothers Bob and Warwick.

Graeme’s funeral service will be held at RSL War Veterans Chapel, 4 Colooli Road, Narrabeen, on Wednesday 24 April at 10am. Friends are welcome to attend.
