Vale Alan Mather

It is with great sadness we report Alan Mather, affectionately known as ‘Big Al’, has passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning 14 March 2019, age 70. After battling cancer for over a year, Alan’s death still came as a shock to family and friends – we thought we still had a bit more ‘mileage’ out of him.

Alan was Born in Balmain and was a Member of CYCA for 25 years. He was an owner of the Scott Jutson yacht Alkea, competing in all CYCA harbour races including the Winter Series. Alan also bought the yacht Icefire which he jointly owned with crew members from Akela.

Alan raced Icefire in many Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Races – it was his aim to compete in 10, however, his diagnosis with prostate cancer in November 2017 meant he was to fall short by just one.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1030hrs Friday 29 March at St Marks Church Darling Point, followed by a Celebration of Life held at 1230hrs at Royal Australian Navy Sailing Association (RANSA).

A true Viking, Alan will be sadly missed by all.
