David Doherty’s Matador won the fifth and final regatta of the Australian TP52 Sailing Association’s inaugural pointscore to be crowned overall champion on TPR handicap, as Gweilo celebrated the series win on IRC.
The CYCA hosted Regatta 5, with three windward-leeward races on Saturday 21 May and an inshore passage race on Sunday 22 May.
Eight TP52s lined up for the series finale, with Matt Donald and Chris Townsend’s Gweilo starring on the opening day, taking all three wins on IRC handicap and leading into Day 2 on the TPR handicap with a win and two second-place finishes.
Matador was second in all three windward-leewards on IRC, also taking out a podium spot in each race on TPR.
That consistency proved the key as victory on both handicaps in the inshore passage secured victory in the regatta for Doherty and his crew.
Gweilo was second in the standings, just one point adrift on IRC.
Sam Haynes‘ Celestial was third on IRC thanks to back-to-back third-place finishes, while Gordon Ketelbey’s Zen came third on TPR.
Those results meant Matador took out top spot (TPR) in the Australian TP52 Sailing Association pointscore, followed by Craig Neil’s Quest and Seb Bohm’s Smuggler.
Gweilo lifted the overall title on IRC, beating Matador and Zen, thanks to wins in Regattas 2 and 4.
