Team Maserati 2019 National Champions

Quick makes it three from three

It has been a busy few weeks for CYCA Member Tom Quick who has now won three National Championships in as many weekends.

This last weekend saw Quick step on to skipper Neville Crichton’s Maserati to victory in the 2019 MC38 National Championships ahead of a star-studded line up of entrants. This comes after claiming the Farr40 and Sydney38 National Championships in the respective weekends prior.

The 10-race Championship was seemingly a veritable host of ‘threes’. Held over three days, the top three positions were separated by only three points at the conclusion of the series. The Race Management team and crews alike were thoroughly tested with wind conditions varying from 5-25 knots and clear skies to torrential rain.

The line up of teams consisted of nine yachts, with many highly awarded sailors on board including Olympians, America’s Cup sailors, World Champions and more.

“The racing is just unbelievable, I’ve only raced these boats twice before so it was an amazing weekend to come away with the win. It was really well run racing in conditions that were particularly difficult, so thank you to the Race Management team,” said Quick.

“The racing is of a very high standard and very very close, sometimes too close, which we found out today when we had to do our turns. It was great fair racing on a very tough race track.”

Heading into the final day, Shaun Lane and Quentin Stewart’s Lazy Dog was sitting in first position after very strong results on the Day 2, ahead of John Bacon’s Dark Star in second and Maserati in third. With a tricky south-westerly course, all teams were going to be challenged in the final day’s racing with many gains and losses had by all.

“We had a loose eye on the points going into today but the main aim was just to go out and give it all we had,” continued Quick.

“To the team, thank you very much for all the hard work and the calls, consistency certainly paid off.”
