Sailing as a Naturally Sustainable Sport

Sailing is a sport that relies primarily on wind propulsion and compared with many motorised recreational activities, can be undertaken with relatively low operational emissions. Sailors develop a strong understanding of weather, tidal patterns, and harbour conditions—knowledge that fosters a culture of environmental responsibility and stewardship.

• Low-carbon recreation, with wind serving as the primary means of propulsion.
• Sailing encourages responsible use of the marine environment and can be undertaken with limited direct environmental disturbance when conducted responsibly.
• Enhanced environmental awareness, as sailors gain knowledge of marine and meteorological systems.

CYCA’s Role in a Sustainable and Responsible Sailing Precinct on Sydney Harbour

Located in Rushcutters Bay, the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) plays a leading role in sustaining this important sailing precinct on Sydney Harbour. Through its sailing programs, youth pathways, world-class events—including the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race—and long-standing community presence, the Club contributes significantly to the environmental and social vitality of the harbour.

CYCA’s contribution includes:

• Preserving active and responsible waterfront use for recreational sailing and seamanship.
• Supporting youth and training programs that embed safe and sustainable boating practices.
• Strengthening the maritime economy and community, through events, regattas, and partnerships.
• Raising environmental awareness, promoting respect for the harbour among members, visitors, and the wider sailing community.

Environmental and Operational Sustainability Measures

The CYCA continues to advance a broad range of environmental and operational initiatives designed to reduce environmental impacts and support long-term harbour health.

Environmental Protection Initiatives

• Enhanced recycling practices, including paper, plastic, glass, electronics and battery recycling to reduce waste.
• Solar power generation, with CYCA’s solar panel systems generating renewable electricity that helps reduce reliance on grid-supplied energy.
• Going paperless, with sailing documents and operational materials increasingly digitised to minimise paper use and waste.

Marine & Harbour Stewardship

• Seabin™, with three units installed throughout the marina to capture floating debris, plastics and surface oils, helping remove floating debris, plastics and surface contaminants from marina waters.
• Safe disposal of expired flares, ensuring all flares are collected and processed through approved NSW disposal programs.
• Clean Marina and Fish Friendly certification, reflecting CYCA’s compliance with industry-leading environmental standards through the Marina Industries Association Accreditation program.

Sustainable Resource Management

• Cooking oil recycling, with fryer oil collected by Cookers, filtered and repurposed for use in other industries, preventing waste and reducing environmental impact.
• Sustainable Food Service Practices, including the separation of all food waste into designated FOGO bins and the use of paper lids and sugarcane straws to significantly reduce single-use plastics.
• Energy efficiency, supported by LED lighting, modern electrical systems and ongoing upgrades to optimise energy use throughout club facilities.

Governance

CYCA’s sustainability initiatives are overseen by management and reviewed annually to ensure environmental programs remain practical, measurable and aligned with the Club’s strategic objectives. The Club will continue to identify opportunities to improve environmental performance and report progress through its member and public communications.
