Short Haul Pointscore returns after short hiatus

The Short Haul Pointscore season kicked off on Saturday with a short offshore course in cold, blustery conditions.

For the 10-strong fleet, it was welcome relief to be back on the water regardless of the conditions after the first two races of the series were abandoned due to COVID-19.

After the 1200hrs start near Shark Island, crews headed up the Harbour before making for the open ocean and a rounding mark laid 3.5 nautical miles off North Head. On their return to Sydney Harbour, crews were sent north to Manly, before heading back south for the finish in Watsons Bay.

Much like the Lion Island Race which kicked off two hours prior, the Short Haul Race was met with a stiff north-north-easterly wind of 15-18 knots which slowly eased throughout the day making for a mix of conditions to contend with throughout the race.

The masters of those conditions ended up being Robert Hunt, Jon Short, Miles Bastick & Greg Gleeson’s Sydney 38 Next who were first across the line and managed to hold onto first place on PHS handicap. David & Stuart McLean’s Xp 38 Solveig II achieved the same feat albeit in second place and Cam Wayland’s Hanse 400e Hunky Dory finished third.
