Love Byte who won PHS

Short Haul Pointscore – Race 11

It was a slow and steady race for the five entrants taking part in the Short Haul Pointscore Race. Michael Selby is able to give a recount of what it was like onboard Cyrene 3.

“As the start time approached, the forecast of light winds began to look very optimistic indeed.  The SOP divisions were sent on their way on time in very light and confused wind conditions, with wind direction ranging from the south-east, north and occasionally, west and rarely above 3 knots. A few minutes from our scheduled start time, a decision was made to delay until the wind settled in.

“An hour and a half later, a brief six to seven knots of breeze drifted in from the northeast and we were sent on our way, on a shortened harbour course.  At that stage, the last of the SOP starters were still clearing Sydney Heads.

Ashley Larkin on Cyrene 3

“Within ten minutes or so, the breeze fluttered back down to 3 knots or less, and our boat speed dropped to under a knot. This was going to be a long day – we had barely passed West Head half an hour later. We decided to retire at that point because of time constraints. Well done to the remaining four starters and to Love Byte for first across the line.

“Here is Ashley Larkin trying out our Big Banana award while hanging around waiting for the start. It is awarded (rarely) to crew members who make silly mistakes. She has never won it!”

PHS saw Cyril Latimer’s Love Byte take out first in PHS, followed by I Guanaria’s One More No More and Hunt/Short/Bastick/Gleeson’s Next in second and third respectively.

The smaller IRC fleet was led by One More No More with Next in second rounding out the division.
