Wild West and Thor take thrilling wins in Race 2 of CYCA Winter Series

There was a fine margin between victory and defeat in Race 2 of the 2022 CYCA Winter Series, as Wild West and Thor claimed divisional wins by just seconds.

In Division J2, Past Commodore Paul Billingham and Pete McGee’s Bakewell White Z39 Wild West crossed the line five seconds ahead of Ray Stone’s Sydney 32 Razors Edge.

That secured consecutive wins for Wild West to start the series, with Bryan Moore’s Northshore 369 Trim in third.

The Division A2 battle was even tighter, as Matthew Hanning’s MC38 Thor chased down Commodore Noel Cornish’s Farr 40 Indi to win by four seconds, as Amazingrace secured back-to-back third place finishes. Indi leads the overall pointscore in the division after winning Race 1.

After Christopher Taylor’s Beneteau Oceanis 34 Danielle won Division K, there was a close battle for second as Adam Jacobs’ Jeanneau 36.2 Buggalugs kept Rear Commodore David Jacobs and Roy Melick’s Dehler 41DS First Light at bay by just 14 seconds.

Jason King’s Farr 40 SOLyMAR made it two wins from two to start the Winter Series, beating Outlaw (Alan and Tom Quick) and Wax Lyrical (Les Goodridge) to the line in Division J1.

Craig Neil’s TP52 Quest held off Matt Donald and Chris Townsend’s TP52 Gweilo to win Division A1, with another 52 – Gordon Ketelbey’s Zen – rounding out the podium.

After a second-place finish in Race 1, Alexander Flecknoe-Brown’s X-41 Oz Design Patrice Six took the win in Division B, ahead of Clewless (Guy Irwin) and Secret Mens Business (David de Coster).

Ian Guanaria steered One More No More to victory in Division D, from Supernova (Alex Seja) and Whistling Kite (Kym Evans).

Highway Patrol (Michael Blaxell) led the way in Division E, with +GST (Jordan Girdis) second and Speedwell (Colin Geeves) backing up last week’s win with a third place.

The Division F win went to Arthur Psaltis’ Hanse 430E Into the Mystic, followed by Wild Oats (Brett Eagle) and Reve (Kevin Whelan).

In a two-way Division G tussle, Checkmate (Fernando Tiglio) got the better of Pacatack (Terry Wise).

The Goat (with Mitchell Gordon at the helm) topped the Sydney 38 Division, while Advanced Philosophy (Peter Sorensen) leads the overall pointscore with a third and second place finish from the two races. Love Byte (David Alais) was third.
