The first race of the 2018 Audi Centre Sydney Winter Series was able to dodge the weekends bad weather with Race 1 of the Audi Centre Sydney Winter Series being held in a 12-15 knot south east breeze.
102 boats raced on the full harbour course with sunny conditions combined with a hint of cool winter temperatures after the long string of warm weather left over from summer.
Starting the series off in great form was Bob Steel onboard his MATT1180 Quest, who won Div1 on PHS.
Bob reflected on the win saying, “You’ve got to be lucky every now and again.”
“I enjoy the winter series because everyone is just out to enjoy the day, enjoy the comradery and I just enjoy sailing the yacht. Even though a lot of the time I’m usually arguing about whether to put the wheels on or the tiller.”
It appears that Bob made the right choice in steering controls this weekend but is always mindful that with the wins can come some losses. With the PHS rating system taking in to account previous race results it is likely to affect the handicap which his boat will take in to the next few races. In response to thoughts about what his updated handicap might be Bob said,
“All I have to do is keep winning, the old handicapper is pretty cluey and will know that the superstar is back on the helm. So we are going to have to cop that punishment. The crew aren’t going to be too happy with the penalties but I say look, when your the best you just got to put up with it guys.”
Bob will be looking to keep his boat on the podium whilst also competing in Wednesday races at RANSA. While he acknowledges he may not always be the best man for the job he is enjoying being able to steer his own boat and have fun racing with his crew.
In the IRC Division Carl Crafoord and his boat SAILEXCHANGE were able to take the lead ahead of Zoe Taylor on GRACE O’MALLEY with Matt Wilkinson on FORREIGH AFFAIR finishing off the podium. With only a minute between the first three boats its a great start to the series with possibilities of top place results for all boats.
The Audi Centre Sydney Winter Series will continue next weekend with hopes of the good weather continuing.
