Noakes 7s Series

Member Tim Ryan has dominated the 2019 Noakes 7s Summer Series, winning nine of the 14 races (including six consecutive bullets in the final six races!) to secure his first series win after taking part in October 2018.

The summer series was one of the most hotly contested, with several crews including Volvo Ocean Racers, America’s Cup sailors and Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race winners.

Contested onboard our Youth Sailing Academy’s fleet of Elliott 7m keelboats the series consists of up to 16 races over four evenings with short sprint races taking place in Rushcutters Bay.

The opening evening saw Tim Ryan’s team take an early advantage over the chasing fleet, taking two wins from the four races with defending champion and current J70 National Champion Reg Lord chasing hard from Tony Kirby’s Patrice Racing team.

The second evening saw Reg Lord tie the series, taking three of the four races, however, this is as close as he would get as Tim Ryan then got on a roll over the following two weeks, winning all six races contested, and sealing the series by five points.

Tony Kirby and his Patrice Racing Team came home in third place.

It was heartbreak for Josh Alexander and his Noakes Group team who led the final race to what they thought would be their first race win, only to be scored OCS, finishing the series in fourth.

“The Noakes 7s Series is a great concept and is always fun, close racing,” said Tim Ryan at the conclusion of racing.

It is fantastic practice for us for our other racing. This was our second attempt at the series, and it feels great to come out on top. We will be interested to see more teams in the next series in October.”

Noakes Group have been a long-standing sponsor of the series, having first signed on in 2017. Their commitment will continue through to the summer of 2020 with the next series dates already set for Tuesday 8, 15, 22, 29 October 2019. The Notice of Race and entries will be open from 1 May 2019.
