The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia races with iBurst

The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) and Personal Broadband Australia (PBA) today announced a three year wireless connectivity agreement.

As the Club’s official connectivity partner, PBA is providing the world’s first commercially available mobile broadband service – iBurst – to the CYCA, its race management teams at all Club races, and to the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race media centre for the next three years.

“Finally technology has arrived that enables easy, instant, and remote access to race information on the water, at the clubhouse, and in the media centre,” said Commodore Martin James of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia.

Wirelessly connected race management vessels and accredited race journalists can now post race results immediately and globally to the web, rather than having to phone them in.
“We can upload timings across the finish line as they happen, and thus publish final results quickly and efficiently from the water. The power and speed of iBurst is tremendous,” Commodore James said.

PBA will provide wireless connectivity solutions to the CYCA in collaboration with its alliance partner NetComm.

This being the race’s sixtieth year, race organisers expect to accredit a large media contingent. The official media centre will operate from December 3 to 27 and cater for the entire race program, culminating in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
PBA’s marketing manager John Filmer said the iBurst solution will make a world famous and iconic Australian yacht race into a technology leader.

“The CYCA is the world’s first major sporting organisation to take mobile wireless broadband onto the water,” said Mr Filmer. “In doing so, the CYCA will experience the communication, productivity and cost efficiency gains only wireless and mobile broadband can deliver.”

Recent CYCA sea and harbour trials revealed strong iBurst signals inside Sydney Harbour, and up to five nautical miles out to sea.

“As a wholesale carrier bringing new technology to market, this prestigious agreement is an important opportunity to raise iBurst’s profile,” said Mr Filmer.

Other CYCA races to benefit from the agreement include: the Sydney Mooloolaba Yacht Race (March), the Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race (July), and CYCA youth events.
