Mount Gay Ocean Pointscore sees fresh Spring winners

With the last race of the Mount Gay Ocean Pointscore series for the year wrapping on Day 1 of Middle Harbour Yacht Club’s Sydney Short Ocean Racing Championship, all Spring Pointscore winners across our divisions have now been decided.

The Ocean Pointscore Series, proudly sponsored by Mount Gay, has seen four races this side of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, with another five yet to come in the new year. A total of 22 yachts have been raced in this year’s Pointscore so far across six divisions which are broken into IRC, ORCi and PHS delegations.

The team aboard Bush Paul Group (AKA Highfield Caringbah) (CYCA), having won two of their Division races with a second and third in the others, have taken out IRC Division 1. Congratulations to the 5200 Syndicate and skipper Ian Short.

IRC Division 2 is currently tied at the top with Supernova (MHYC) claiming the win on countback after two Division wins, with a second and fifth as well – a lovely birthday present for skipper Matt Hanning who is celebrating this month – well done team for another great win.

Our two ORCi Divisions have also been hotly contested with Bob Steel’s Quest (CYCA) claiming two firsts, as well as a third and fifth place to just push out Julian Farren-Price’s About Time (CYCA) for the top spot in Division 1. Steel, who was the Overall Winner of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in both 2008 and 2002 with previous Quests is showing that even at the age of 72, one can still actively compete in (and win) ocean races!

ORCi Division 2 has gone to Dennis Cooper’s Amante (CYCA) with a dominant three-from-three race wins (Cooper did not compete Race 4) in the series so far. Congratulations to Cooper and the team aboard Amante for a stellar performance in the Pointscore so far.

Andy Offord, and the team aboard Borderline (CYCA) have claimed PHS Division 1 with Offord another who is receiving this as a birthday present this month!. Kevin Whelan’s Rêve, which has also been very active in the Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore series, has been strong in PHS Division 2 – winning all but one race as well to currently sit in first place.

Full results can be viewed on the Results page of the CYCA website – make sure to stay tuned to the next five races as the final Pointscore winners are determined. Updates can also be viewed on the CYCA Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages when available. Use and follow #MountGayOPS on social media to catch all the action.
