Members recognised at 2020 Australian Sailing Awards

GORDON INGATE OAM – Lifetime Achievement award

A Lifetime Achievement Award has been awarded to Gordon Ingate OAM (Member since 1949). Gordon is one of the most accomplished sailors in Australian history and one who has given so much in that time. His sailing resume includes representing Australia at the Olympic Games (Tempest class 1972), in America’s Cup Challenges (Skipper of Gretel II in 1977) and Admiral’s Cups (Cowes 1965) alongside many national and international titles. MATT ALLEN AM – 2020 Offshore Sailor of the Year

The 2020 Offshore Sailor of the Year Award has been awarded to Matt Allen AM (Member since 1999). Matt and his Ichi Ban team has dominated the offshore circuit in 2019-20 by winning the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race for the second time in three years, the Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore for the second year in a row and the IRC Nationals for the third year in a row. CYCA SOLAS Trusts Bravery Award

When the yacht Showtime lost its keel and inverted off the coast of Bermagui, it was Christian Charalambous (non-Member) and his crew who were first on the scene to help.

With the yacht slamming up and down in the waves, endangering the crew, Christian Charalambous removed his life jacket and dove under the yacht to release the life raft.

Described by the yacht’s delivery skipper Rob Buchanan as “doing one of the bravest things I’ve ever seen” Christian Charalambous’s selfless act, ensured the survival of the seven crew. Read more.
