Member Spotlight – Stephen Ainsworth

This week’s member is a Sydney Hobart Yacht Race Overall Winner who was a staple in CYCA Offshore Racing for many years.

CYCA Member Since: 1997

Favourite CYCA Memory: Getting to the bar at the CYCA after the end of a race and having a few drinks with my crew!

Proudest achievement on the water: It would have to be winning the 2011 Sydney Hobart Yacht Race overall on my yacht Loki. A close second would be winning our division in Hamilton Island Race Week in 2010 and as a result, the Australian IRC Championship. Audi were the sponsors of the championship and the prize was an Audi A5 which I gave to my wife. The brownie points lasted a long time.

Bucket list event still to enter/attend: I have pretty much stopped sailing now but one event which has always appealed to me is the Newport Bermuda Race.

Best thing about the CYCA: Being able to keep my boat Loki in a great marina, not far from where I live and meeting a lot of terrific people along the way.

Favourite sailing movie/book and why: The Hornblower series of novels which has eleven books and has been made into a tv series as well. Whilst the stories are fictional, they are based on research into past naval practices and the descriptions of how life was in the Royal Navy two hundred years ago makes us all look like a bunch of softies now.

Outside of sailing I…: Wife and grown-up children for starters. I have enough business interests to keep me occupied a fair bit of the time and I love to go cycling, usually three or four times a week.

Advice to my younger self: Get on with things, the years slip by all too quickly.
