Great Veterans Race Re-vamped for 2018

As the 75th anniversary of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race approaches, the local offshore community, in conjunction with the organising authority, the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, have come together to reinvigorate the annual “Great Veterans Race”.

Now in its 30th year, the race for the Windward Trophy, which was traditionally conducted alongside the Opening Ladies Day of the CYCA’s Winter Series, has been revitalized with a distinct presence on Sydney Harbour.

The 2018 edition of the Great Veteran’s Race will be staged as a stand-alone event by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia on April 28.

For the first time it will be contested as a pursuit race, or more commonly known as a “stern chaser” format that proved popular during the recent Admiral’s Cup Anniversary Regatta.

The Great Veterans Race is open to any yacht that competed in the Sydney to Hobart prior to 1975, or was launched before 1975 and competed in the race subsequently. It will be a “no extras” (non-spinnaker) race, with competitors invited to return to the CYCA after racing for the presentation of the Windward Trophy.

Yachts that have already lodged their entries include some of the most famous names in Australian offshore racing history.

Fidelis, MarisJosephine and Mister Christian will be joined by the recently-restored Solveig, one of the few yachts to have won both handicap and line honours in the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

Participation in the 2018 Great Veterans Race is an opportunity to actively celebrate our nation’s unique blue-water sailing heritage.
