Congratulations to Matt Donald, Chris Townsend and the “white ghosts” on Gweilo for another exemplary performance taking out provisional IRC honours in the first of the three Summer Offshore Series races for 2021.
The team completed the 90-nautical-mile race around Flinders Islet and back in 10 hours 17 minutes 44 seconds, beating rival TP52s Celestial and Smuggler in the Fully-Crewed Divisions by over 15 minutes on corrected time.
Carl Crafoord’s Cookson 12 Sail Exchange took honours in IRC Division 2 with a very creditable seventh overall. Kimberley Jagger’s Sydney 38 Cinquante and Mark Gorbatov’s Beneteau First 40 Blink were the other placegetters.
For PHS, CYCA Director Sam Haynes’ Celestial beat David Gotze’s RP63 No Limit by just over 10 minutes on corrected time with Seb Bohm’s Smuggler only one second behind in third. In PHS Division 2, Sail Exchange and Cinquante were joined by Ian Edwards’ Dehler 46 Wings in third.
Rupert Henry and Stacey Jackson made it home in 17 hours 3 minutes 20 seconds on the Lombard 34 Mistral to take out the Two-Handed Division.
With four retirements and the last boat, Steven Capell’s Swan 65 Eve, finishing around 4:16am this morning, it had been a somewhat challenging race but a great hitout for 2021.
The next race in the Summer Offshore Series is the 100nm virtual mark race Saturday 20 February.
