Fan favourites return for CYCA’s Great Veterans Race

The CYCA’s annual Great Veterans Race (GVR) will see a fleet of around 20 classic yachts that have competed in at least one Sydney Hobart Yacht Race grace Sydney Harbour on 10-11 May.

Two divisions will run in 2025. The ‘Classic’ division is open to boats launched prior to 1976 and the ‘Modern Classic’ division is open to yachts launched after 1975 but prior to 1996. This change has been made so the GVR categories will match those in this year’s 80th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

Three-time Sydney Hobart winner and fan favourite, Simon Kurts’ 1973 S&S 47 Love & War is set to race in the two-day regatta in the Classic division.

James Mackenzie, owner of the 1981 Dubois One Tonner Bimblegumbie, is back after winning IOR Era Yacht division in 2024.

And Sam Hunt, owner of the 1973 S&S IOR 3/4 tonner Nike, is also ready to defend their divisional win from last year.

Hunt loves competing in this regatta, as it shines a light on Australia and the CYCA’s rich yachting history.

“We are excited to participate in the CYCA Great Veterans race again in 2025,” Hunt said. “We always look forward to this race as a celebration of the history of the Club.

“The classic sailing scene in Sydney is building each year with a great calendar of events and I’m pleased to see it. After all, they’re not building any more of these classic, legendary and beautiful sailing vessels.”
