East Coast Low Pressure Systems Information Evening

Join us 1800hrs Wednesday 28 April as Bureau of Meteorology Severe Weather Meteorologist Hugh McDowell presents an insightful session on East Coast Low (ECL) Pressure Systems.

The Evening will be held in conjunction with the South East Australian Nautical Institute Branch and will explore how some of Australia’s worst maritime disasters are caused by the destructive winds, torrential rainfall and rough seas that accompany stronger ECLs. These are very intense low-pressure systems characteristic of the eastern coastline of Australia.

ECLs are not normal low pressures so are they sufficiently understood by mariners? Is it worth considering other methods (e.g. renaming) to better highlight the associated risks, particularly to those seafarer’s that do not frequent the Australian east coast?

The evening is free and open to all. Ticketed seats at the Clubhouse have now booked out but you can still join us via the live stream.
