With many crews taking a week off from racing during the Queens Birthday long weekend, they were eager to get back out on the water to make a good start to the second half of the CYCA Winter Series.
It was a gloomy morning with heavy rain lashing much of Sydney, but as yachts made their way out to the start line the rain cleared and to entrants’ delight stayed off the race course for the duration.
“It was a good race for us, quite tight with people overtaking each other throughout the whole race. Really excellent race with enough wind to get everyone moving but as we got to the end of the first lap the breeze really started to die,” said Les Goodridge of Wax Lyrical.
“It was good that we only did one lap as I don’t think we would have made it around the second time. We had some rain just at the beginning of the day but it held off the whole race so our requests for no rain were answered.”
Currently Goodridge and his team are sitting in first position for PHS DivB after three first-place results putting them eight points ahead of second place. The team will however be missing the upcoming races so are hoping that their hard work in the first half of the season may be able to be enough to keep them on the podium come prize giving.
“We are away for the next few races but will be back for the final Women’s Winter Series race and then off to the Gold Coast with the usual suspects onboard.”
With the Australian offshore season starting in the upcoming months, many teams will be using these races to practice for the multitude of conditions which they will see in the upcoming offshore races through the rest of the year.
