CYCA Winter Series – Race 2

A very stark contrast to what was experience in last week’s gloomy and windy conditions, Race 2 of the CYCA Winter Series showed off what Sydney has to offer in the colder months of the year.

Crews were treated to clear blue skies and a 10-knot southerly breeze as they made their way out to the start line. As true to many winter days gone by, with the day warming up the breeze died to a slow five knots before swinging around to the south east and building once again to consistent 10 knots.

The crew on board the Peter Sorensen’s Sydney 38 Advanced Philosophy were able to plant their foot firmly on the top step of the podium with this week’s performance. After purchasing the boat in march, Sorensen is happy with their progress in the class so far.

“I love the boat, only had it since March but really enjoy it,” said Sorensen.

“Can’t complain with the result from yesterday. We were a bit lucky, we went very fast on the first downwind. We managed to get in different breeze and picked up a couple of wind shifts that many of the other boats missed which by the bottom mark gave us a bit of a gap.”

This week’s podium position was a great reward after a navigational error in the first race of the season.

“The previous week when it was windy we were in front but went to the wrong mark so that wasn’t a great result. The boat’s going pretty fast and have some good guys on board who I have sailed with regularly so looking forward to more racing,” said Sorensen.

In PHS DivE Stephen Girdis and his crew on +GST we very pleased with their first outing for the season taking first place.

“It was the first race that we have done this season, our maiden outing. Conditions suited our little boat with the light and patchy conditions. This weekend I had my son Jordan with me and some of his friends with some of my friends as well. Just a great day out,” said Girdis.

“I’ve had the boat for about five years, I originally bought it for the Melges 24 worlds in 2012 and have had it ever since. These days I race it more for fun in twilights and the Winter Series.”
