The inaugural race of the CYCA Winter Series was held Sunday in classic Sydney winter weather. Not really sure what she wanted to do, Mother Nature started off providing beautiful blue skies with 15-20 knots of sou’ sou’-westerly before sending blasts of up to 40 knots and squalls racing across the city and down the Harbour.
Despite the forecast looking woolly, a strong fleet managed to cross the start line for Race 1 of what is CYCA’s largest series by entrants.
“We had 84 yachts which was a great start to the season and very pleasing to see the return of the 38 division after a year off with a strong fleet of 10 yachts,” said Race Officer John Allen.
“It was a bit light on for yachts this weekend from the usual, but there was an unfavourable forecast and the day had a mix of rain, sunshine and wind so that would have affected it. There were some strong gusts which came through and inconvenienced a few boats getting them cold and wet. A few boats retired with some minor gear breakages, but all yachts and crews were safe.”
Among those taking up the challenge was CYCA Treasurer Arthur Lane and his crew.
“It was Beneteau breeze,” says Treasurer Lane whose Beneteau Oceanis 51.1 Wilde Rush sailed to Division B victory despite damaging their spinnaker.
“But It was also a great day for sailmakers! The conditions were testing but we had a lot of fun out there for Race 1 of the CYCA Winter Series.”
